I did it! Wednesday was my last day of work, marking less than two weeks until I leave for my three-month journey through Europe!
My last day was very strange to be honest. I had finished up most of my projects the day before, so I spent the morning doing some cubicle housekeeping: clearing out old files, packing up my shoes from under the desk and crafting my goodbye email to the company.
Towards the end of the day the office was mysteriously quiet and I felt silly sitting around without a project to do so I thought I would start my goodbyes. Not many people were at their desks so I got in about three hugs before seeing my boss. I told her I was starting to make my rounds and she suggested we go get some water together one last time (we would always encourage each other to drink more water and get up from our desks to fill up in the kitchen) so I said sure and we started walking. But instead of turning right into the kitchen, we moved left into a conference room and there were 25 of my colleagues waiting for me for a surprise Bon Voyage send off! It was so sweet and thoughtful and I was in a bit of shock! I spent the next hour enjoying beer and snacks with the people I've spent the last year and a half with, sharing travel stories and tips, and I couldn't be happier about how it all came to an end.
Walking home that evening was surreal and I had such mixed emotions: excitement, sadness, nerves, adrenaline. Honestly I feel like I could have burst into laughing or tears at each street corner. But I kept my emotions in check, had some celebratory cocktails with a friend and passed out early, waking up to my first day of unemployment since entering the work force!
