A girl who lost her sight but didn't lose sight of herself...
Matilda is a 14-year old girl from Milan, Italy who, at the age of 12, had a terrible riding accident. She was in a show jumping competition and her horse fell at the last jump and the next thing she knew, she was waking up at the hospital. The first thing she asked, before acknowledging her injuries, was if her horse was okay. Matilda lost her sight in this accident and has had to re-learn many of the things we take for granted each day. Through it all, she has one of the most positive, joyful dispositions of anyone I’ve met.
This brave girl isn’t just at Crossogue to take in the fresh Irish air. She is here to ride…. and to ride cross country, arguably the most difficult equine discipline. Not only did she overcome her injuries from the fall – mental and physical – and not only did she take up riding again when she was able, Matilda continues to jump with passion and confidence.
Her determination, braveness and overall positive outlook are inspiring. As I gear up for my final riding session in the morning and then continue along my travels, I know I will look back at my encounter with Matilda and gain inspiration from her story again and again.
